I hope you have all managed to spend some quality time on the beach this summer. Wow — what a summer it was! Whilst we have not been in regular touch with you, we have still been busy over the past few months trying to secure proper representation for beach hut licence holders with Havant Borough Council.
This survey indicates that maintenance remains an issue for rented beach huts. Among renters who replied, 71% said their hut currently required work, while 29% reported council maintenance during the past year. The responses describe problems with floors, doors, roof fittings, paintwork and water getting in. These are respondents’ accounts and have not been independently inspected.
We know that dealing with Havant Borough Council over beach-hut matters can sometimes be frustrating and complicated. HIBHA is here to support and represent all Hayling Island beach-hut licence holders, but there may also be occasions when you need to make an individual complaint.
The past few weeks have been exceptionally busy for your HIBHA Committee. We have continued meeting with Havant Borough Council, challenging decisions where necessary and pressing for meaningful engagement on behalf of beach hut owners and renters. At times we believed genuine progress was being made, only to find those expectations dashed.
We hope everyone is enjoying the good weather and making the most of their beach huts. We wanted to provide an update on what the Association has been doing on your behalf recently. Firstly, apologies that communications have been quieter than usual. This has largely been due to some health issues on my part, but work has continued behind the scenes.
📢 HIBHA is pleased to confirm that CCTV cameras will be installed at the Chichester Avenue toilet block during the week commencing 6th April. This is a positive step forward for our community, helping to monitor the area and deter anti-social behaviour—benefiting all beach hut owners and visitors.
More than 70 beach hut owners and supporters gathered on 8 March for the first Annual General Meeting of the Hayling Island Beach Hut Association at the Hayling Community Centre. The meeting was also attended by local councillors Jonathan Hulls and Mark Coates, reflecting the growing interest in the Association and its work on behalf of beach hut licence holders.
Our First Annual General Meeting (AGM) will take place at Hayling Island Community Centre, Station Road, Hayling Island on 8th March 2026 starting at 5pm. please find our Agenda and the nominations for the Committee.
Beach hut invoices will be issued shortly. The Council has advised that outstanding fees will now be actively followed up and licences may not be renewed where payments remain unpaid.
The Hayling Island Beach Hut Association (HIBHA) is aware that some beach hut licencees have recently received non-domestic (business) rate demands.
Hayling Island Beach Hut Association (HIBHA) was formed after two meetings of Beach Hut owners on Hayling seafront at Easter 2025, following the significant increase in Licence fees by Havant Borough Council. Those present agreed to create an Association, and Andy was widely supported to lead. A Committee was formed from volunteers at those meetings and began working immediately to challenge the Council.
